About the apprenticeship - Is it right for me?

From an industry perspective, the job of an Electrician is often considered to be one of the top trades. The work is technical, physical and always challenging. You will be employed in an industry that is mobile. Construction of new buildings and refurbishment of old ones is a continual and necessary part of the world in which we live.

There are a number of important aspects to the day to day work of an electrician in the construction industry. The three main areas are as follows:

Domestic work:

This is work carried out in the housing environment and includes wiring and rewiring of domestic properties. You might also carry out fault finding, inspection & testing or be asked to modify or upgrade the electrical system in a house or apartment.

Commercial work:

Retail premises, office accommodation and public buildings are typical of this category of environment. This is generally a more demanding type of work in terms of skill and experience over the domestic environment. The type and range of technologies, materials and installation techniques is continually developing.

Industrial work:

Electricians play a very important part in this type of work. Factories with production areas, workshops, stores and reception facilities require power distribution, lighting and power systems. These buildings also need computer wiring, CCTV, telecom and alarm wiring to be installed. Working at heights and in confined spaces often feature in this type of work.

Some other existing and developing areas of work for an electrician include specialist work in street lighting, maintenance, and renewable energy system.
