Info for parents/guardians - Is it the right choice?
From an industry perspective, the job of an Electrician is often considered to be one of the top trades. The work is technical, physical and always challenging. It can be enjoyable and rewarding but it also involves a lot of hard work and it is not for everyone.
Therefore, before the young person embarks on the four year Electrical Modern Apprenticeship Programme, it is important to ask yourself do they have:
- a liking for practical work and an ability to work with their hands
- an aptitude for maths and science (see specific entry criteria)
- a willingness to work inside – outside – schools – factories – shops - homes – new build – warm – cold – clean and dirty
- a physical fitness, as often heavy materials and equipment need to be moved
- ability to work at heights and in confined spaces
- a positive attitude
- a ready willingness to accept directions
- problem solving and logical thinking abilities
- ability to work as part of a team
If so, then a career in the Electrical Contracting Industry could be for them. If not, encourage the young person to think about their interests, personality, skills and abilities. Encourage them to consider the things they like and dislike and how these relate to other career choices.
