Testing Times
by Derek Thompson on 06 January 2012

You might be wondering about the new replacement electrical inspection and testing qualifications. The City & Guilds 2391 has entered its final year of shelf life, at least for the purposes of registering to sit the examination.
If you have the City & Guilds 2391 qualification, be happy and content, this is a valuable and prized possession for the modern electrician. It will continue to be a valid means of supporting your authenticity as a qualified and competent person.
The City & Guilds 2391 will be replaced and upgraded by two separate Level 3 qualifications. These are designated as City & Guilds 2394 (Initial Verification) and 2395 (Periodic Inspection).
ETT will commence delivery of the two new courses from April 2012. This will mean that the opportunity sit the 2391 will diminish.
The two new qualifications will require more time and incur more expense. So in the meantime we are advising all prospective candidates to register their interest for the existing 2391 qualification before it becomes unavailable.
How will the new qualifications be assessed?
2394 will be assessed by one practical assignment (set by City & Guilds, marked by the centre), and one knowledge test, details TBC.
2395 will be assessed by one practical assignment (set by City & Guilds, marked by the centre), and one dated entry question paper, which will be available on a set number of dates throughout the year, and marked by City & Guilds.
How long will the 2391 qualifications remain?
2391 closes for new registrations on 31 July 2012, with a final certification date of 31 December 2013. Dated entry examinations will continue to be available until the summer of 2012, exact final date of the 301 and 303 examinations to be confirmed.
Can 2391 units be used towards achievement of the 2394, 2395 or 2396?
It is not anticipated that candidates who hold 2391 units will be able to use these towards the new qualifications. Candidates who have achieved one of the 2391 units but not completed the full qualification should ensure they complete the remaining unit prior to the final certification date.
Please note that the 2391-301 and 2391-303 exams are not likely to continue beyond mid-2012, although this is subject to demand. They may continue beyond this date, but with a reduced number of examinations per year.
