Course Overview

To complete the training, you will need to have either a PC or laptop with a webcam and be able to download GoToTraining software prior to the course commencing. Step by step guidance on how to access the training will be provided to you.

You will need to have a copy of the required books for the course.  Please note, we will provide a clean copies of the books for the exam which is undertaken at our City & Guilds Centre.

What to expect

We will send you a learning pack in the post with everything you will need on the day of the course.  Don’t worry if you aren’t confident with computers, all you have to do is click a link and enter a few details to join the online classroom. When the live classroom finishes, we will provide you with further guidance for exam preparation.

Who is this course for

This course is intended for experienced electricians and installers who are looking to enhance their current skillset to allow them to install domestic, commercial and ‘on street’ vehicle charging points.  This course covers all the key skills to install, fault find and inspect and test electric vehicle charging points.  This 2-day course, covers domestic and commercial installations and is designed for qualified electricians.  Unlike many others this course includes the C&G qualification and assessments.

This course is accredited by City & Guilds and allows installers to register as a OLEV-approved chargepoint installer. 

Day 1 will focus mainly on the theory, the date for the second day of training will be confirmed after booking.  Day two will take place at ETTs practical assessment centre.  This second part of the course will give you the opportunity to get some hands-on practical experience and also complete of the online and practical assessment.  Following successful achievement of the qualification, you will be able to install and test EV car charging points in domestic and commercial properties

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, however we do expect you to meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum age 18 years old (mandatory)

Must be able to demonstrate the following competencies

  • Be able to correctly install and terminate: pvc/pvc cable (twin and earth) Steel Wire armoured cable (swa)
  • Be able to carry out an initial verification (inspection & testing) on an electrical installation and complete the necessary paperwork.

Note: These competencies are required for the assessment and are not taught as part of the course.

  • It is recommended that you are up to date with your 18th edition wiring regulations.

Course Overview

You will be taught how to design, specify, install, fault find, test and inspect electric vehicle charging points both for the commercial and domestic sector. This includes the “on street” points that you may have seen in many town centres.

  • Introduction to Electric Vehicles – Electric Vehicle types, Characteristics, Charging requirements, Safety considerations
  • Overview of Electric Vehicle charging – Modes of charging and requirements, restrictions
  • Electrical Installation Requirements – Supply, Earthing, Planning permission, Explosive atmospheres, Protection, Labelling, Control, Risk assessment
  • Installation – Practical domestic and commercial installation
  • Inspection, Test and Certification – Commissioning and DNO paperwork
  • System Test, Fault Finding and Examination – Includes both a practical and written assessments


 You will be required to complete 2 forms of assessment following the course.

  • Online Multiple Choice Exam
  • Practical Assessment

Please note that you must bring photographic ID such as a passport or driving license with you in order to sit the assessments on this course.
