This programme will provide a comprehensive overview of the relevant British Standards for these technologies, covering:
  • Legislation under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and The Building Regulations 2000
  • BS5839-1:2017 Part 1 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings
  • BS5839-6:2019 Part 6 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings (domestic)
  • BS5266-1:2016 Emergency lighting
  • BS EN 1838:2013 Lighting applications – Emergency lighting
  • BS5266-8:2004 Emergency escape lighting systems
  • BSEN 1838:2013 Lighting applications – Emergency lighting

Programme Structure (theory)

This programme is classroom based and includes theory assessment and practical exercises on custom made rigs with assessments taking place during the programme. The assessment process is two-fold,
  • Theory – The fire alarm theory assessment is a paper based multiple choice assessment. The emergency lighting assessment is a paper based, multiple choice paper assessment. (the assessment is open book).
  • Practical assessment- Includes carrying out the inspection and fault finding on a two-zone fire alarm panel.

Programme Requirements

Although there are no formal prerequisites, it is expected that candidates will have previous cable installation experience of similar systems and a knowledge of electrical theory principles.
